Bernie Carbo hit a grand slam during a five-homer barrage that powered the Red Sox to a 12-4 victory over the Mariners. Jim Rice began the slugging with a circuit clout in the first, Butch Hobson connected with two men on base in the second and George Scott rapped a round-tripper with one aboard in the third.

Rice hit his second homer of the game for another run in the fifth. Mike Kekich, pitching in relief for the Mariners, walked four batters in the sixth to force in one run before Carbo hit his grand slam. [The Sporting News]
