The Mets, who literally walked their way into a tie with two runs in the ninth, proceeded to beat the Dodgers, 4-3, on a single by pinch-hitter Lee Mazzilli in the 14th inning. Davey Lopes homered with a man on base for the Dodgers, who sailed along with a 3-1 lead until the ninth when Charlie Hough, in relief of Doug Rau, walked Felix Millan and Steve Henderson.

Elias Sosa came in and struck out John Stearns. Lance Rautzhan took over and retired John Milner on a pop fly, but Mike Vail singled, driving in Millan. Joel Youngblood beat out an infield hit to load the bases and Doug Flynn walked to force in Henderson with the tying run. In the 14th, Youngblood singled for his third hit of the game, advanced on a balk by Mike Garman, reached third on a sacrifice bunt by Flynn and scored the winning run on Mazzilli's pinch-hit.
