Nolan Ryan became the first A. L. pitcher to gain 15 victories this season when the Angels defeated the Yankees, 5-3. The Angels rapped Ron Guidry for three runs in the second inning, two scoring on a single by Terry Humphrey, and posted their winning margin in the eighth when Bobby Bonds hit an inside-the-park homer with Jerry Remy on base.

Ryan, who worked seven innings before tiring, gave up five singles and yielded the Yankees' initial run on three hits in the first. The Yankees added an unearned run off Dave LaRoche in the eighth and a homer by Graig Nettles in the ninth. [The Sporting News]
