Becoming a 15-game winner, Steve Carlton not only swung a good bat in his own cause, driving in three runs, but allowed only six hits and struck out 12 while pitching the Phillies to an 8-1 victory over the Padres. A pass to Davey Johnson and singles by Garry Maddox and Carlton loaded the bases in the second inning and set up two runs on a single by Jerry Martin.

The Phils picked up two more in the third and added a pair in the fifth when Carlton singled with the bases loaded. Carlton's third single of the game produced one of the Phillies' final two runs in the seventh. [The Sporting News]
