Eric Rasmussen pitched a four-hitter and Jerry Mumphrey got that many himself for the Cardinals in a 5-1 victory over the Braves. Mumphrey rapped a double and three singles in five trips. Gary Matthews homered in the second inning for the Braves' lone run.

The Cards went ahead to stay with two runs in the third. Lou Brock singled and stole the 885th base of his career. Brock took third after Garry Templeton flied out and continued home on a wild throw by Jeff Burroughs. Mumphrey followed with a double and scored the leading run on a single by Mike Anderson.
