A wild pitch by Wayne Garland with two out in the ninth inning allowed Jerry Terrell to score and enabled the Twins to defeat the Indians, 6-5. Lyman Bostock had two hits and drove in two early runs for the Twins, while Duane Kuiper and Ron Pruitt each had three hits for the Indians. Pruitt's first homer of the season tied the score at 5-5 in the eighth.

In the ninth, Craig Kusick was safe on an error by Buddy Bell and gave way on the paths to Terrell. After Terrell moved around to third on a sacrifice by Bob Randall and infield out by Roy Smalley, Garland walked Rod Carew but then beat himself with a wild pitch while facing Butch Wynegar.
