The Mariners hammered Catfish Hunter for five runs in the first inning and went on to post a 9-2 victory over the Yankees, who lost their third straight game and fourth of the last five. Bill Stein smashed a three-run homer in the first and Steve Braun, next up, also hit for the circuit in the opening attack on Hunter.

The Mariners then eased off until the seventh when Leroy Stanton homered with two men on base to kayo Hunter. After Sparky Lyle relieved, Ruppert Jones hit the first inside-the-park homer in the history of the Kingdome. [The Sporting News]
