Preston Hanna had a 1-0 victory in his grasp, but the Braves' rookie righthander faltered in the ninth inning and lost to the Padres, 2-1. The Braves' run came on a homer by Jeff Burroughs in the seventh. Jerry Turner opened the Padres' rally in the ninth with a homer to tie the score and Dave Winfield followed with a double.

Hanna fumbled a bunt by George Hendrick, putting runners on first and third. After issuing an intentional pass to Gene Tenace, Hanna retired the next two batters but then walked pinch-hitter Pat Scanlon on a 3-and-2 count to force in the Padres' winning run. [The Sporting News]
