After Dan Driessen homered with two men on base in the first inning, the Reds added single runs in the fourth and fifth to edge the Dodgers, 5-4, behind the pitching of Tom Seaver. Driessen's homer came with two out after a pass to Joe Morgan and single by George Foster. Davey Lopes led off with a homer in the Dodgers' half. The Reds scored in the fourth on a single by Driessen and double by Johnny Bench. Pete Rose doubled in the fifth and scored what proved to be the winning run on a single by Morgan.

Reggie Smith homered for the Dodgers in the seventh and Seaver gave up two more runs in the eighth on a single by Lee Lacy, double by Lopes and single by Bill Russell before bearing down to complete his victory. The crowd of 53,022 at the game boosted the Dodgers' attendance to 2,005,986 on their 50th home game, marking the earliest time that any club had surpassed the two million mark.
