George Scott, Butch Hobson and Dwight Evans smashed consecutive homers in the sixth inning when the Red Sox sent 10 men to the plate and scored seven runs en route to a 13-6 victory over the Mariners. The Red Sox had an earlier round-tripper by Carl Yastrzemski in the second inning, but the Mariners took a 4-2 lead in the fifth when Dan Meyer and Skip Jutze hit for the circuit off Fergie Jenkins, Jutze's blow coming with two aboard.

In the sixth, Yastrzemski doubled but two were out before the Red Sox began their cannonading with drives by Scott and Hobson to kayo Bob Galasso. Evans greeted reliever Enrique Romo with the Red Sox' third homer in a row. Following a walk and single by Rick Burleson, Fred Lynn tripled to add two runs and scored himself on a bad throw from the outfield by Steve Braun.
