The Cubs tied the game with an unearned run in the ninth inning and scored again on an error in the 15th to defeat the Pirates, 6-5. Bill Robinson hit two homers for the Pirates, his second blow coming with two men on base in the eighth. Jose Cardenal opened the Cubs' ninth with a single and was forced on an attempted sacrifice by Mick Kelleher. One out later, Greg Gross doubled and when Omar Moreno made a wild throw from the outfield, Kelleher scored to knot the count at 5-5.

Bobby Murcer singled for the Cubs with one out in the 15th. Steve Ontiveros grounded to Rennie Stennett, who missed the tag on Murcer in an attempted forceout and both runners were safe. Gene Clines then hit a slow roller to Stennett. With no play possible at first, Stennett tried to catch Murcer at third, but his throw went wild into the Cubs' dugout and Murcer was waved home with the winning run. [The Sporting News]
