Tom Seaver brought his record with the Reds to 6-2 since coming from the Mets June 15 by pitching a five-hitter to defeat the Padres, 5-1. The Padres' run in the second inning was unearned. George Hendrick singled, stole second, continued to third on a wild throw by Johnny Bench and scored on an infield hit by Mike Champion.

The Reds were held to two hits by Bob Owchinko until the sixth when Joe Morgan doubled and Ken Griffey tripled. Dan Spillner relieved and uncorked a wild pitch to allow Griffey to score.
