Reggie Smith opened the Dodgers' ninth with a single. After Randy Moffitt replaced John Montefusco, Ron Cey sacrificed. Steve Garvey was retired for the second out. Manny Mota then batted for Glenn Burke and grounded to Madlock, who booted the ball, allowing Smith to score.
