An error by Bill Madlock on what should have been the third out enabled the Dodgers to score two runs in the ninth inning to defeat the Giants, 3-2. The Giants took a 2-1 lead when Derrel Thomas homered in the eighth.

Reggie Smith opened the Dodgers' ninth with a single. After Randy Moffitt replaced John Montefusco, Ron Cey sacrificed. Steve Garvey was retired for the second out. Manny Mota then batted for Glenn Burke and grounded to Madlock, who booted the ball, allowing Smith to score. Mota reached second on the error and yielded the paths to Ted Martinez, who scored the winning run when Dusty Baker singled. [The Sporting News]
