The Yankees rallied for three runs in the seventh inning and defeated the Tigers, 5-4, for their 10th victory in the last 11 games. Jason Thompson smashed a tremendous homer with a man on base in the sixth to give the Tigers a 3-2 lead. The ball was the first to be hit over the right field stands at Tiger Stadium since 1969.

In the Yankee seventh, Graig Nettles and Willie Randolph led off with singles. After a sacrifice, Mickey Rivers sent them home with a single and then scored himself on singles by Roy White and Lou Piniella. [The Sporting News]
