The Giants, who scored their only earned run of the game on a single by Tim Foli with one out in the 13th inning, beat the Cubs for the first time in nine meetings, 4-3. The Cubs counted twice in the second on singles by Jerry Morales, Steve Ontiveros, Manny Trillo and Ray Burris.

After the Giants went ahead, 3-2, on errors by Ontiveros and Ivan DeJesus, the Cubs tied the score in the sixth when Morales doubled and Ontiveros singled. With Paul Reuschel on the mound as the Cubs' fifth pitcher, Jack Clark walked and stole second. Darrell Evans then drew a pass before Foli hit his single for the game-deciding run.
