John Candelaria and Larry Demery combined on a six-hitter as the Pirates made two early runs stand up for a 2-1 victory over the Dodgers. Frank Taveras drew a walk from Doug Rau in the first inning and raced home on a hit-and-run single by Phil Garner and an error by Lee Lacy. Fernando Gonzalez singled in the next frame, stole second, took third on an infield out and scored on a double by Omar Moreno.

Candelaria blanked the Dodgers on four hits before back trouble forced him to leave the mound after five innings. Demery gave up a homer by Reggie Smith in the sixth but yielded only one more hit over the rest of the route. [The Sporting News]
