The Dodgers, who had homers by Johnny Oates and Ron Cey in their attack, scored an unearned run in the fifth inning to defeat the Cardinals, 5-4. After Oates connected in the third inning, the Dodgers racked up three runs in the fourth on a pass to Reggie Smith, Cey's homer, singles by Steve Garvey and Rick Monday and a forceout by Dusty Baker.

Then in the fifth, Lee Lacy beat out an infield grounder to Garry Templeton and advanced to second on the shortstop's wild throw. Lacy proceeded to steal third and scored what proved to be the winning run on a sacrifice fly by Smith. [The Sporting News]
