Bob Knepper, Giants' rookie lefthander, pitched a three-hitter and breezed to a 7-1 victory over the Cubs. After singles by Ivan DeJesus and Bobby Murcer around an error by Vic Harris produced an unearned run in the first inning, the Cubs did not get another hit until Bill Buckner singled in the ninth.
