After putting on a power display with four homers, the Red Sox pushed over two runs in the eighth inning and defeated the Twins, 7-5. Tommy Helms homered with a man on base in the third and Butch Hobson followed with a four-bagger, marking the 15th time this season that the Red Sox hit back-to-back homers.

Bob Montgomery joined in the slugging in the fifth and George Scott in the sixth. The Red Sox then posted their deciding pair in the eighth on a walk to Helms, double by Hobson and successive sacrifice flies by Carl Yastrzemski and Jim Rice.
