The combination of Jim Lonborg's pitching and Bake McBride's batting carried the Phillies to a 3-0 victory over the Reds. Lonborg allowed five hits as the Phillies won at home for the 15th straight time to break the Philadelphia club record set in 1890. Bake McBride, who was a last-minute starter in place of Garry Maddox, collected three of the Phillies' four hits off Mario Soto and Doug Capilla.

A pass to Ted Sizemore, sacrifice by Lonborg and double by McBride produced the Phillies' initial run in the third inning. McBride homered in the fifth and then, like their first run, the Phillies put together a pass to Sizemore, sacrifice by Lonborg and double by McBride for their final tally in the seventh.
