. . . where the 1970s live forever!

The Phillies protected their seven-game lead in the National League East by dividing a doubleheader with the Pirates. The Pirates won the first game, 3-1, but the Phillies bounced back to take the afterpiece, 11-1, as Steve Carlton became the major leagues' first 20-game winner.

A run-scoring double by Dave Parker in the second inning proved to be the deciding blow in the opener. Carlton hit his third homer of the season and also drove in a run with a single as the Phillies took the second game and ended their 10-game losing streak at Three Rivers Stadium.
