Making his 14th start for the Cardinals, Tom Underwood turned in his first complete game and defeated the Cubs, 3-1. Lou Brock singled in the first inning, stole second, took third on a passed ball and scored on a single by Garry Templeton.

After Templeton was thrown out trying to steal second, Ted Simmons smashed a homer. The Cubs counted in their half on a double by Jose Cardenal and single by Bill Buckner, but the Cards clinched the verdict with a run on a single by Simmons in the third. [The Sporting News]
