. . . where the 1970s live forever!

Jim Rice drove in three runs with his 36th and 37th homers in the first game and batted in his 100th run of the season with a sacrifice fly in the second game as the Red Sox beat the Tigers in a twi-night doubleheader, 5-1 and 8-6. Bill Campbell, who relieved in both ends, earned his 25th and 26th saves. Rice homered after a single by Carl Yastrzemski in the second inning of the opener and added a solo shot in the sixth, in addition to having a single in four trips. Carlton Fisk also rapped three hits and scored twice. Ron LeFlore, who had hit safely in 17 straight games for the Tigers, was stopped on his streak.

In the nightcap, the Red Sox failed to hold a 5-0 lead, but after the Tigers tied the score, Fred Lynn doubled in the fifth inning, advanced on a wild pitch and scored on Rice's sacrifice fly to put the Red Sox ahead again. Rick Burleson then delivered run-scoring singles in the sixth and eighth for the winning margin to offset the Tigers' last tally on a homer by Jason Thompson. [The Sporting News]
