A grand slam by Jim Rice for his 38th homer of the season powered the Red Sox to a 6-2 victory over the Tigers. The Red Sox counted their first two runs in the sixth inning. Carl Yastrzemski doubled and, after holding up, had to stop at third on another double by Rice.

An infield out by Carlton Fisk produced one run and a single by Butch Hobson added another. In the seventh, Bernie Carbo and Fred Lynn walked and Yastrzemski beat out an infield hit, setting the stage for Rice's slam off John Hiller. [The Sporting News]
