Johnny Bench knocked in two runs with a double to reach the 100 RBI total for the sixth time in his career and Tom Hume gained his first major league victory as the Reds defeated the Dodgers, 6-2. Bench's double helped the Reds take a four-run lead in the first inning.

The Dodgers loaded the bases against Jack Billingham with none out in the third. Hume got out of the inning at the expense of two runs on a sacrifice fly by Ron Cey and single by Steve Garvey. The rookie then shut out the Dodgers over the remainder of the route on only four more hits. Pete Rose, hitting safely in his 12th straight game, batted in a run for the Reds with a single in the fourth and Dave Concepcion capped the scoring with a single in the eighth.
