Although staked to a three-run lead, Rick Reuschel failed for the third straight time in a bid for his 20th victory when the Mets defeated the Cubs, 7-3. A double by Bill Buckner, single by Steve Ontiveros and homer by Manny Trillo accounted for the Cubs' runs in the fourth inning.

The Mets struck back with four runs in the fifth. Bobby Valentine and Lenny Randle singled and both scored on a double by Bruce Boisclair. John Milner tied the score with a double and Joel Youngblood sent the Mets ahead with a single. The Mets clinched the decision with three more runs in the ninth, two of them scoring on a double by Youngblood. [The Sporting News]
