A three-run homer by Greg Luzinski powered the Phillies to a 6-5 victory over the Cardinals, who lost all three games of their series in Philadelphia and won only three games while losing 13 on their longest road trip of the season. The Cards scored twice in the first inning on a double by Lou Brock, triple by Garry Templeton and infield out by Keith Hernandez.

John Denny walked three Phillies in the third and all three scored on a sacrifice fly by Jay Johnstone, double by Garry Maddox and sacrifice fly by Bob Boone. The Cardinals went ahead again with three runs in the fourth, but in the Phillies' half, Tommy Hutton and Bake McBride hit singles and Luzinski showed his muscle to the Cardinals with the game-winning homer.
