Perfect relief work by Pete Falcone, who retired 12 straight batters after replacing Bob Forsch in the sixth inning, saved the Cardinals' 3-1 victory over the Cubs. Forsch was forced to retire because of a strained leg muscle. The save was the first of Falcone's major league career.

The Cards counted all their runs off Ray Burris in the fifth inning. A single by Mike Phillips, pass to Lou Brock and single by Jerry Mumphrey produced the first tally. Brock took third on Mumphrey's hit. After Mumphrey stole second, Garry Templeton singled to drive in the decisive runs. The Cubs' counter in the sixth was unearned. [The Sporting News]
