The Red Sox erupted for six runs in the sixth inning and posted a 7-3 victory to salvage the finale of the three-game series with the Yankees and pull within 2½ lengths of the East Division leaders. Mike Torrez, who started for the Yankees, developed a sore shoulder and yielded the mound to Sparky Lyle in the fifth.

Bernie Carbo started the uprising against Lyle with a single in the sixth, advanced on a passed ball and scored on a single by Carlton Fisk to break a 1-1 tie. Carl Yastrzemski and Jim Rice followed with singles to load the bases and George Scott also singled to drive in two runs. Fred Lynn walked to reload the sacks. After Butch Hobson hit into a forceout at the plate, Denny Doyle cleared the bases with a triple. Luis Tiant gave up a homer by Reggie Jackson in the fourth inning and two-run blow by Thurman Munson in the eighth for the Yankee runs before Bill Campbell took over to finish the game.
