Jose Cardenal tripled home the tying run in the eighth inning and scored the game-winner on Bill Buckner's infield out to give the Cubs a doubleheader split with a 4-3 verdict over the Mets. The home team won the opener when pinch-hitter Ed Kranepool hit a bases-loaded double in the ninth and Cub outfielder Joe Wallis erred on the play to permit the winning run to score in the 5-4 Met victory.
