Two pinch-hitters came through for the Giants in ninth to defeat the Padres, 3-2. Randy Elliott, batting for Charlie Williams, singled. After a forceout by Derrel Thomas and balk by Rollie Fingers, Marc Hill came up as a pinch-hitter for Bill Madlock and singled to drive in the winning run.

Gene Richards, Padres' first baseman, broke the major league record for most stolen bases by a rookie, pilfering his 50th and 51st of the season. The former mark of 49 was set by Rollie Zeider of the 1910 White Sox and was tied by Sonny Jackson of the Astros in 1966. [The Sporting News]
