A double by Juan Beniquez in the sixth capped the Rangers' only scoring inning of the game and beat the Athletics, 3-1, behind the pitching of Doyle Alexander, who posted his 17th victory. Keith Smith doubled and Mike Hargrove walked before catcher Jeff Newman committed a two-base throwing error on a sacrifice bunt attempt by Bert Campaneris, allowing Smith to score.
