The Expos jumped on Steve Carlton for four runs in the first inning and defeated the Phillies, 7-2. Chris Speier singled, Andre Dawson walked and, after two out, the Expos tagged the Phils' 23-game winner for a single by Ellis Valentine, double by Gary Carter and single by Larry Parrish.

The Phillies scored on back-to-back homers by Greg Luzinski and Richie Hebner in the second. After his initial troubles, Carlton pitched scoreless ball before leaving the game after eight innings. The Expos added their final runs off Ron Reed in the ninth. [The Sporting News]
