The Mets rapped 20-game winner Bob Forsch for four runs in the first inning but needed two more tallies on a triple and single by Joel Youngblood to defeat the Cardinals, 6-4. Doubles by Lee Mazzilli, Leo Foster and Bruce Boisclair and singles by Steve Henderson and John Stearns kayoed Forsch in the first.

Henderson singled and Youngblood tripled in the third. A walk to Henderson and singles by John Milner and Youngblood added the Mets' last run in the fifth. The Cards rallied for their scores in the last two innings before Rick Baldwin earned his first save of the season by retiring the final two batters. [The Sporting News]
