Rookie righthander Roger Erickson won his first major league start as the Twins edged the Mariners, 5-4. Roy Smalley hit a first-inning homer for the Twins, who tallied three times in the second on a single by Mike Cubbage, doubles by Dan Ford and Willie Norwood and a single by Smalley. The winning margin came in the ninth on successive singles by Bombo Rivera, Smalley and Rod Carew. Two of the Mariners' runs scored on wild pitches.
