After Dave Winfield homered in the eighth inning to tie the score, a walk with the bases loaded gave the Padres a 3-2 victory over the Giants before an opening-day crowd of 36,131. Gaylord Perry, Mickey Lolich and Rollie Fingers pitched for the Padres to make a success of Roger Craig's debut as manager. Perry struck out eight in six innings and moved into a tie with Jim Bunning for third place on the all-time list with a career total of 2,855.
