Mario Guerrero, playing against his former club, smashed a three-run homer with two out in the eighth inning to bring the A's a 4-2 victory over the Angels. Nolan Ryan pitched the first six innings for the Angels, allowing only two hits and striking out 13 before manager Dave Garcia removed the righthander because he had thrown 123 pitches.

The A's began the eighth with a run off reliever Paul Hartzell before Dave LaRoche took over with two men on base. After retiring two batters, LaRoche fell victim to Guerrero's homer. Guerrero played out his option with the Angels last season and signed with the Giants, who then sent him to the A's as part of the deal for Vida Blue. [The Sporting News]
