The Rangers jumped on Dick Tidrow, who had recorded seven straight victories over them, for three runs in the first and went on to a 5-2 victory over the Yankees. Mike Hargrove got a leadoff walk but appeared to be picked off by catcher Thurman Munson. First baseman Chris Chambliss thought Hargrove was trying to get back to the bag and, without looking, swiped at the bag with his glove. Hargrove, however, headed for second and made it easily. Bert Campaneris erased Hargrove with a fielder's choice but Al Oliver singled, Toby Harrah doubled and Claudell Washington singled to produce three runs.

Tidrow left the game in the sixth after surrendering a double to Oliver and a homer to Richie Zisk. Ranger starter Dock Ellis pitched the first five frames to pick up the win although forced to depart because of a sore shoulder. [The Sporting News]
