Jesus Alou drove in the winning run in the bottom of the ninth as the Astros outlasted the Dodgers, 11-10, in a wild slugfest. The decisive tally resulted when Art Howe opened the frame with a double. Jimmy Sexton ran for Howe and moved to third on Wilbur Howard's infield out. Alou then rapped a bouncer to second baseman Davey Lopes, but Sexton beat the throw to the plate.

The Dodgers had tied the game in the seventh with four runs after two were out and nobody on. Dusty Baker's single and two walks loaded the bases. Pinch-hitter Lee Lacy, Lopes and Bill Russell then followed with consecutive singles. The Astros had scored five runs in the fourth despite having two outs and no runners aboard.
