A booming triple by Willie McCovey snapped a 1-1 tie and sent the Giants on their way to a 5-1 victory over the Braves. San Francisco trailed, 1-0, going into the bottom of the fifth when starting and winning pitcher Vida Blue led off with a walk. He moved to second on Larry Herndon's single and both runners advanced on a balk.

Darrell Evans was given an intentional pass to load the bases before Bill Madlock scored Blue with a sacrifice fly and McCovey followed with his three-bagger to right center.
