Yankees' high-priced pitching acquisition Rich Gossage continued to flop as the loser of a 4-3 decision to the Blue Jays. John Mayberry led off the ninth inning with a single and Garth Iorg ran for him. Rick Cerone attempted a sacrifice bunt but Gossage's throw to second went into the dirt, leaving runners on first and second.

When Dave McKay followed with another bunt, Gossage threw the ball over first baseman Chris Chambliss' head as Iorg raced home with the winning tally.
