Errant fielding by the Braves in the 12th inning allowed the Padres to take a 5-4 decision and complete their first sweep of any four-game series since 1976. With one out and the Braves ahead, 4-3, George Hendrick reached first on shortstop Darrel Chaney's throwing error. Bill Almon got an infield hit and Ozzie Smith singled to deep short to fill the bases.

Eddie Solomon, the Braves' fifth hurler, then uncorked a wild pitch, allowing Hendrick to score with the tying run. Jerry Turner got a walk to refill the bases. Gene Richards then grounded to Chaney, who booted the ball as Almon scored the winning run.
