A double steal by Omar Moreno and Dave Parker turned into a pair of runs in the eighth inning when third baseman Bobby Valentine misplayed catcher John Stearns' throw and enabled the Pirates to defeat the Mets, 4-2. Moreno drew a one-out walk off reliever Mardie Cornejo and stole second. Parker then received an intentional pass.

With Bill Robinson at bat, Moreno and Parker worked a double steal and when Stearns' throw to third skipped off Valentine's glove down the left field line, both runners scored to snap a 2-2 tie. The Mets had rallied in the seventh to produce that deadlock on pinch-singles by Ed Kranepool and Joel Youngblood. [The Sporting News]
