Art Howe opened the 10th with a single and was replaced by Gonzalez, who went to second on Ed Herrmann's sacrifice bunt. Roger Metzger walked and both runners moved up on Wilbur Howard's groundout. Walling then drove the ball over left fielder Jerry Turner's head.

Padre starter Dave Freisleben retired 10 of the first 11 batters but Cesar Cedeno's one-out single in the fourth inning was followed by a walk to Jose Cruz and Bob Watson's three-run homer. RBI singles by Oscar Gamble and Bill Almon lifted the Padres to a 3-3 tie in the sixth. [The Sporting News]
