Gaylord Perry recorded his 248th career victory as the Padres nudged the Astros, 2-1. The Padres got a run in the third as Chuck Baker drew a leadoff walk, moved to second on a sacrifice and scored on Ozzie Smith's two-out opposite-field blooper to left. Derrel Thomas singled home Gene Tenace in the ninth.

Perry lost his shutout bid in the ninth when Bob Watson doubled and Joe Ferguson singled. After Ferguson's hit, Rollie Fingers came on to retire the final Astro batter. [The Sporting News]
