Rookie righthander Gary Serum, making his first major league start, pitched the Twins to a 6-1 victory over the A's, halting the Twins' losing streak at nine, longest in club's history, and the A's winning skein at eight. Wayne Gross' third-inning homer was the only Oakland run.

The Twins scored twice in the third on a walk, single, throwing error and doubles by Bob Randall and Willie Norwood and added a run in the third on Mike Cubbage's sacrifice fly. Rod Carew extended his hitting streak to 10 games. [The Sporting News]
