For the second time in two games, Willie McCovey batted in three runs with a bases-loaded double as the Giants defeated the Pirates, 5-4. The Giants' first two runs came on homers by Bill Madlock and Jack Clark. Dave Parker batted in three runs for the Pirates with a homer and single.

In the Giants' ninth inning, John Candelaria lost control and walked Madlock, Darrell Evans and Clark to load the bases. McCovey then smashed his double to bring John Montefusco his first victory of the season.
