A wild pitch proved the difference as the Giants edged the Cardinals, 2-1. With the Giants ahead, 1-0, in the eighth, Terry Whitfield opened the inning with a single and went to second on Darrell Evans' sacrifice. Dave Hamilton relieved starter John Denny and walked Willie McCovey, who left the basepaths for pinch-runner Skip James. Mark Littell then replaced Hamilton on the mound and uncorked a wild pitch permitting Whitfield to score from second base.

The Cardinals got their run in the eighth when Jerry Mumphrey walked, moved to second on Mike Tyson's single, took third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a groundout. Randy Moffitt replaced Vida Blue in the ninth after the Cardinals put their first two hitters aboard and retired three straight batsmen. The Giants' first run came in the sixth on Jack Clark's double and Larry Herndon's RBI single.

Bill Madlock was thrown out of the game in the ninth by umpire Charlie Williams, working his first major league game behind the plate. The Giant second baseman complained on a called strike and when he was slow getting back into the batter's box, Williams ordered the pitcher to throw the ball and it was a called third strike.
