An error by third baseman Phil Garner set up the winning margin as the Padres edged the Pirates, 2-1. With the score tied, 1-1, in the sixth, Derrel Thomas led off with a single. Mike Champion then hit what looked liked a sure double play grounder to Garner. But when the third sacker muffed the ball, Thomas reached third on the play and scored when Bob Davis hit into a double play.

The Padres' other tally came in the second on a double by Thomas and single by Mike Champion. The Pirates scored in the first when Omar Moreno walked, stole second and came around on Dave Parker's single. [The Sporting News]
