Called up from the minors earlier in the week, Bob Sykes allowed only four singles and posted his first major league shutout, pitching the Tigers to a 6-0 victory over the A's. The young lefthander was with the Tigers in 1977 and had a 5-7 record but was sent to Evansville (American Association) this spring. The Tigers backed Sykes with a 15-hit attack that included a homer by Jason Thompson. [The Sporting News] |
